The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into the 2022 leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, according to a Fox News report published Thursday.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro's Washington office is leading the investigation, Fox reported, citing multiple sources briefed on the matter. The Justice Department declined to comment. The probe has not been publicly confirmed in a department announcement.

Politico published the draft opinion before the court issued its final ruling in 2022. Chief Justice John Roberts ordered an internal investigation, but that inquiry did not identify the person responsible for the leak.

The reported criminal probe is separate from that earlier internal review. No charges or suspects were announced in the Fox report, and the department has not publicly outlined the scope of the investigation.
